The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is mourning the loss of Capt. Steve Henderson, a nearly 20-year veteran of the agency, who tragically died Thursday evening in a motor vehicle collision.

Details of the crash remain limited. The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed deputies responded to a collision but referred inquiries to the S.C. Highway Patrol, which is leading the investigation. The Oconee County Coroner’s Office is handling inquiries regarding the fatality.

Henderson joined SCSO in 2005 and served with distinction in Uniform Patrol, Narcotics, and as a longtime K-9 handler. He also spent years on the SWAT team and later led the K-9 Unit as lieutenant. In January 2024, he was promoted to captain of uniform patrol, succeeding Capt. Gregg Satterfield.

A fellow law enforcement officer described Henderson as “a captain in a vital place” at the agency, highlighting his importance to both colleagues and the community.
