A tragic scene unfolded Wednesday evening at an apartment complex in Red Bay, where a mother and her two daughters were found dead in what authorities believe was a murder-suicide.
According to Red Bay Police Chief Janna Jackson, the incident occurred at an apartment on Eugenia Nixon Circle, part of the Red Bay Housing Authority. Officers responded to the residence and, upon entering, discovered three women deceased inside.
Chief Jackson identified the victims as 59-year-old Theresa Sappington, 28-year-old Leigha Moody, and 23-year-old Derick Moody.
Investigators believe that Derick Moody fatally beat her mother and sister with a baseball bat before taking her own life. A baseball bat and a firearm were recovered from the scene.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our community,” Chief Jackson said, noting that the investigation remains ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Authorities have not released further details, and no other individuals are believed to be involved.
