A string of water-related emergencies occurred this week along the shores of North Myrtle Beach, highlighting both the dangers of the ocean and the swift actions of beachgoers and emergency personnel.
Tuesday, August 5 – Cardiac Emergency Turns Fatal at Cherry Grove Fishing Pier
The first and most tragic incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, when a middle-aged to senior adult male suffered an apparent heart attack or cardiac arrest while swimming far out near the Cherry Grove Fishing Pier. Witnesses say multiple beachgoers immediately sprang into action, pulling the man to shore and beginning CPR efforts right away.
The quick response indicated the man may not have drowned but rather suffered heart failure while in the water. Emergency responders continued CPR after loading him into the back of a pickup truck, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wednesday, August 6 – Woman Rescued Near The Towers
The following day, on Wednesday, a woman near The Towers at North Myrtle Beach was pulled from the water after what authorities described as an accidental drowning. Lifeguards and medical staff on the scene acted quickly to revive her.
Fortunately, she was stabilized and is expected to make a full recovery with no signs of brain damage, according to medical staff. North Myrtle Beach officials are reminding all visitors to remain vigilant while in the water, especially during the busy summer months when heat, waves, and underlying medical conditions can pose heightened risks.
“We commend the quick actions of bystanders and lifeguards in these incidents,” one official said. “While the outcomes varied, their efforts helped prevent further tragedy.”
Tuesday, August 6 – Medical Emergency at Ocean Creek
Later that same day, a second incident unfolded at Ocean Creek, where a man in the surf experienced a medical emergency due to a dislocated knee. The injury caused him to struggle in the water, and he required assistance to get safely back to shore.
After being helped out of the ocean, the man was able to sit and recover for several minutes and is reported to be in stable condition with no further complications.
Beachgoers are encouraged to swim near lifeguard stations, stay hydrated, and notify beach staff if they are experiencing any discomfort or distress in the water.
Authorities continue to investigate the fatal cardiac incident but have not released the identity of the man pending family notification. This is a developing story. Updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
