Authorities in Bertie County have confirmed that Tahj Bazemore, a 2018 graduate of Bertie High School, was killed in a shooting that took place Tuesday on Highway 45 in Merry Hill.

Bazemore, the son of Anita-Jordan Bazemore and Kedrick Terrell Bazemore, was among the victims in the violent incident that left one dead and two others seriously injured. The two surviving individuals were airlifted to a local hospital, according to the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of Highway 45 North, where the scene was quickly secured. Authorities stated that the situation is now contained and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, the identities of the injured have not yet been released. Officials say names of all victims will be shared once more information is confirmed.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has been called in to assist local law enforcement in piecing together the circumstances that led to the shooting. No arrests have been made at this time, and the motive remains under investigation.

The sheriff’s office has urged residents to avoid the area as investigators continue to collect evidence and conduct interviews. Tahj was a father of one.
