The victim, identified as 63-year-old Robert Stempel, was involved in the fatal accident that occurred around 4:16 p.m. on South Dixie Road near Jordan Creek Road in Aiken County, South Carolina.

Authorities report that Stempel was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche truck heading northbound on South Dixie Road when, for reasons yet to be determined, the vehicle veered off the left side of the roadway. The truck then struck a fence and overturned.

Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, and due to the severity of Stempel’s injuries, he was airlifted to Prisma Health in Columbia for advanced medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office confirmed that it was contacted to investigate the death and began coordinating with other agencies to determine the cause of the crash.

Toxicology tests are currently pending, as is standard procedure in fatal accidents, and may provide additional information about any contributing factors. Investigators have not yet stated whether speed, weather, mechanical failure, or possible impairment was involved in the accident.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has joined the investigation and is assisting in reconstructing the crash to better understand how the incident unfolded. At this stage, no other vehicles are believed to have been involved, and no other injuries were reported.

The coroner’s office emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and further details may emerge as more evidence becomes available. Robert Stempel, a longtime resident of Salley, was known in the local community, and news of his sudden passing has come as a shock to friends and family.

Officials have not released any information about funeral arrangements or surviving relatives at this time. This fatal crash comes amid a troubling week for road safety in Aiken County.

Authorities noted that it follows another deadly accident that occurred earlier in the week, raising concerns among local residents and officials about driver safety and road conditions in the area.

The repeated incidents have prompted renewed discussions around roadway improvements, increased patrols, and public awareness efforts aimed at reducing the number of serious crashes in the county.

The loss of life on local roads has left many in mourning, and community members are reminded to drive cautiously, wear seatbelts, and avoid distractions behind the wheel.

As the investigation continues, officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has relevant information to contact the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
