It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sabrina Walker Hernandez, a passionate leader, inspiring mentor, and beloved member of the Edinburg, Texas community.
Sabrina passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of service, empowerment, and compassion that will forever resonate in the lives of those she touched.
Sabrina was the President and CEO of Building Better Boards, a nonprofit consultancy through which she trained and mentored countless leaders across the country.
Her mission was rooted in building capacity, increasing impact, and fostering sustainability in nonprofit organizations. With tireless dedication, she worked to strengthen community leadership, leaving behind a trail of empowered individuals and stronger institutions.
Her professional journey was remarkable. Before launching Building Better Boards, Sabrina served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV, where her passion for youth development and community building came to life.
She was a visionary who led with both strategy and heart, ensuring that every child who walked through the club’s doors felt valued, supported, and inspired. Sabrina was also a proud veteran of the United States Army, where she served as a Specialist.
Her time in the military instilled in her a sense of discipline, resilience, and integrity that she carried with her throughout her life. She was fiercely committed to serving others, no matter the role.
A lifelong learner, Sabrina pursued education with purpose and excellence. She earned a Certification in Nonprofit Management from Harvard Business School and studied at Clemson University, University of Texas–Pan American, and University of Texas Pan American, where she specialized in history and nonprofit leadership.
She was an advocate for education and personal growth, often encouraging others to invest in their own development and strive for greatness. Her roots began at Rocky Mount High School and Brunswick Senior High, where her passion for leadership and service first began to shine.
Over the years, she never lost her connection to the communities that shaped her, and she remained grounded in gratitude and humility, even as her influence grew. Those who knew Sabrina will remember her kindness, generosity, and radiant smile.
She had an extraordinary ability to light up any room she entered. Whether she was speaking at a conference, mentoring a nonprofit leader, or spending time with loved ones, she always brought positivity and joy. Her laughter was contagious, her advice thoughtful, and her presence comforting.
Sabrina believed in the power of people and community. She built bridges, opened doors, and lifted others as she climbed. She never hesitated to share her knowledge or lend a helping hand. Her impact rippled far beyond Edinburg—reaching nonprofit boards, leaders, and communities throughout the nation.
In her passing, the nonprofit world has lost a true champion, and her community has lost one of its brightest lights. The outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and mentees speaks volumes about the legacy she leaves behind.
A celebration of life will be held to honor Sabrina’s extraordinary journey and her contributions to so many. Details will be announced in the coming days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sabrina’s memory to an organization supporting youth development or nonprofit leadership—causes she devoted her life to.
Though Sabrina Walker Hernandez is no longer with us in body, her spirit of service, wisdom, and compassion will live on in the countless lives she uplifted.
She leaves behind not just memories, but a movement. May she rest in eternal peace, and may we continue the work she began with the same passion and heart she carried every day.
