According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a two-car accident in Fairfield County on Sunday afternoon resulted in the death of a 23-year-old.
Austin Mathias Accident, Asheville OH: Man, 23, died in Fairfield County car crash
The accident happened on U.S. Route 33 close to mile marker 23 in Berne Township shortly before 1 p.m.
According to OSHP, a 1999 Ford Ranger and a 2022 Mazda truck were traveling east on U.S. 33.
The Mazda driver allegedly failed to keep a safe distance in front and collided with the rear of the Ford. According to OSHP, the pickup truck was subsequently pushed off the right side of the road, collided with a traffic signpost, and flipped over.
The Ford driver, named Austin Mathias from Asheville, was declared dead at the location.
The 21-year-old Mazda driver was taken to Fairfield Medical Center, assessed there, and subsequently discharged. Austin Mathias graduated from Logan-Hocking High School and was a devoted father and husband to Katelyn Mathias.
Mathias is survived by his parents, wife, and child.
