It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the Hilton Head Island High School community announces the passing of longtime Athletic Director, Coach Joe Monmonier.
A devoted educator, mentor, and advocate for student athletes, Coach Monmonier leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, leadership, and heart. His passing marks the end of an era for the Seahawk family and for the broader athletic community across South Carolina.
Coach Monmonier served Hilton Head Island High School for more than two decades, beginning his tenure as a Special Education teacher and lacrosse coach. From the moment he joined the Seahawk staff, Joe brought with him a deep sense of purpose and a tireless work ethic.
He had a natural ability to connect with students and athletes from all backgrounds, offering not just instruction but genuine encouragement, tough love, and unwavering support. His athletes respected him not only for his knowledge of the game but for his kindness, fairness, and belief in their potential.
For the past thirteen years, Joe served as the school’s Athletic Director, where his influence grew even more profound. Under his leadership, Hilton Head Island High School’s athletic programs thrived—earning accolades, championships, and, more importantly, a reputation for integrity and sportsmanship.
He advocated fiercely for student-athletes, ensuring they had the resources, facilities, and guidance to succeed both on and off the field. His door was always open, his calendar always full, and his heart always dedicated to the kids.
More than just a leader on campus, Joe Monmonier became a pillar of mentorship across the state. He was highly respected among fellow Athletic Directors and frequently lent his experience and insight to colleagues throughout South Carolina.
Whether through statewide committees, regional planning, or personal conversations, he was a guiding voice in the athletic community—someone others turned to for wisdom and strength.
But it wasn’t only in athletic circles where Joe made an impact. He was beloved by students, staff, and parents alike for his calm demeanor, wry sense of humor, and steadfast presence.
He knew the names of countless students who passed through the halls of HHIHS. He remembered their stories. He cheered them on. He was there in times of triumph and in times of struggle. To many, he wasn’t just a coach or administrator—he was family.
Joe’s passing is deeply felt throughout the Seahawk community, and grief counselors will be available on campus Monday, July 14, to offer support to students, staff, and anyone in need. The school also encourages families to reach out directly at 843-689-4800 if their student needs additional care during this difficult time.
Information about memorial services and ways to honor Coach Monmonier’s life will be shared as it becomes available. In the meantime, the Seahawk family is united in gratitude for his years of faithful service and in mourning for a man who gave so much of himself to this community.
Joe Monmonier’s legacy will live on in the fields where teams still compete, in the students who carry his lessons forward, and in the countless hearts he touched along the way. He will be missed, remembered, and celebrated always.
