Tragedy struck the San Diego community on the evening of Saturday, July 5, 2025, when a person reportedly jumped to their death from the iconic Coronado Bay Bridge.
The incident, which prompted an immediate law enforcement response and resulted in the closure of the bridge in both directions, has left residents heartbroken and seeking answers.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., reports began to circulate on social media indicating possible police activity on the bridge, with concerned citizens noting the presence of officers near the center span.
“It’s 8:24 p.m. and there’s still no movement on the bridge,” one user posted. “Try to avoid heading into the island on the Coronado Bay Bridge right now.” The bridge closure quickly caused traffic congestion on both sides, particularly affecting those traveling from downtown San Diego into Coronado.
A witness returning home from work near Seaport Village shared her concern on social media: “On my way back from work from the Hyatt by Seaport Village, I saw that the Coronado Bridge was closed and had police on the top. What happened? Is the person okay? Hope everyone is having a peaceful and beautiful restful night.”
While police have yet to release the identity of the individual involved, they have confirmed that a death occurred as a result of someone jumping from the bridge. The San Diego Harbor Police and other emergency responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after the initial 911 calls.
Recovery efforts were underway for hours, and the bridge remained closed well into the evening as authorities conducted their investigation. “Heads up everyone,” another local wrote on a community page.
“The Coronado Bridge is closed in both directions. I believe it’s a police activity, and you can draw your own conclusions, but whatever it is, it’s not good news for those involved.”
